What is the Activator Programme?

The Activator programme will provide individuals with an interactive and practical training course that will enable them to support their PGA Professional to introduce more people to golf.

Having a trained Activator could mean that the PGA Professional is able to increase the number of participants in each group and ultimately get more people involved in junior or adult beginner activity.

This new Activator Course is a collaboration across all the Home Nations, funded and supported by the R&A and endorsed by the PGA.

What is the role of the Activator?

The Activator’s role is to support the PGA Professional in a non-coaching capacity. With the training provided, there would be no form of technical instruction or coaching carried out by the Activator. Any technical instruction will continue to be delivered by PGA Professionals.

The roles and responsibilities of the Activator include the following:

Setting up the coaching environment

Welcoming participants to the facility

Supervising juniors

Delivering non-technical activities as part of a programme plan set out by the PGA Professional

Social media updates

Follow on communication with participants

Duties will depend on the requirements of the lead PGA Professional and therefore it is anticipated that they will vary from Activator to Activator.

Who can become an Activator?

The Activator programme is for those who are:

New to helping out with activities for beginner golfers

Interested in getting involved with supporting activity

A parent or guardian who would like to support junior coaching sessions

A young volunteer, junior captain/vice-captain who would like to help their peers enjoy golf

An existing volunteer who lacks the confidence to actively support the PGA Coach at their club

You don’t need a lot of golf knowledge or experience to attend, just a willingness to ‘help out’ at your club.

The course is open to everyone 16 years and above.

What does the training involve?

By the end of the course Activators will gain a better understanding of:

Practical non-technical training

Fundamental movement skills

Inclusion awareness

Teaching games for understanding

The role of the Activator vs the PGA Professional

Before being deployed Activators should ensure that they have completed the Child Wellbeing & Protection in Sport (CWPS) course and are a member of the PVG scheme through their golf club/facility.
